Everyone’s skin is different. As a result, your skin may need to be cared for differently. Male skin, for example, can be oily and hairy, and thicker. This means that you might need to use different products or do certain things to take care of your skin.
Determine Your Skin Type
Some people’s skin is drier than others. Some people have oily skin, and some have acne. The American Academy of Dermatology has 5 different skin types:
- Normal skin is usually clear and does not have blemishes or oil. It is not sensitive to products with dyes or other fragrances.
- Oily skin is skin that looks greasy and shiny.
- Dry Skin, dry skin is when your skin is rough and itchy. The more you scratch, the more you will have dry skin, and it might flake off.
- Combination skin is skin that has both dry and oily areas.
- Some people have sensitive skin. It can react to some things and cause it to burn, itch or sting.
People can tell what skin type they have by how their skin looks, feels, and reacts. Then they can use a routine that is best for them.
Skin Care Routine for Men
To take care of their skin, a person should:
- wash daily
- apply moisturizer
- apply sunscreen
- check skin regularly
The American Academy of Dermatology suggests people pick skin products based on their skin type. They also have other recommendations, like to use items that are oil-free and non-comedogenic. These things do not cause clogged pores that might lead to acne.
A good routine starts and ends with washing your skin. That means cleaning your face in the morning, evening, and after sweating or exercise. Use gentle soap without oils that may clog your pores.
When people shave, the AAD recommends that they do not stretch the skin. They also suggest:
- Making sure to use a sharp blade.
- Starting shaving from one side of your face and then moving on to another area.
- Shaving in directions that go with the grain of your hair, not against it.
- Rinsing after each pass
- Changing the blade after every 5–7 shaves
After shaving, it is important to rinse off all the shaving cream from your face. Then it would be best if you put on some moisturizing cream or ointment.
Moisturizing is important for your skin. It can help with oil and dryness on your skin, which can make it look better. Moisturizing also helps to minimize the appearance of blemishes on your skin. Also, you can have collagen drinks to get make your skin youthful.
The University of Tennessee Medical Center tells you to use lotion after a bath or after washing your hands. These are their tips on how to keep skin moist:
- avoiding hot, prolonged showers
- using a humidifier
- only using mild soaps
- patting the skin dry after washing
- drinking plenty of water
The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends using sunscreen every day for at least 30 minutes before going outside. This includes cloudy days because the sun’s UV rays can still reach Earth’s surface. The foundation also suggests applying sunscreen to your entire body, covering you if you shift or change clothes.
The National Health Service in the United Kingdom recommends people use sunscreen with at least an SPF 30. That doesn’t matter if you are outside or inside because the sun can still get in through windows. People who spend more time outside should use a stronger SPF.
Check Skin Regularly
Dermatologists recommend that people without a family or personal history of skin cancer undergo a full-body skin check every year. Before, those who have had skin cancer should see their doctor every 3-4 months for a check-up. People with a family history of this condition should see their dermatologist every 6 months.
If you are at high risk for skin cancer, you can also do monthly checks in a well-lit room with your own eyes.
Routine For Oily or Acne-Prone Skin
For people with sensitive skin, they should be careful about the products they use. For example, products could contain dyes or fragrances that might irritate their skin. For dry skin, these people should moisturize regularly and may want to take other steps like using a cream for their hands and feet.
Routine for Combination Skin
Many people have skin that is both oily and dry. It cannot be easy to deal with both skin types, so try different strategies from different routines. See what works best for the person’s skin type without making either one worse.
